What the European Travel Information and Authorisation System means for you
Starting in mid-2025, travellers heading to Schengen Area countries will need to apply for ETIAS, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. Designed by the EU, ETIAS aims to boost security by pre-screening travellers from visa-exempt countries.
While not a visa, this authorisation adds a layer of protection, helping to identify any potential security or migration risks. For most, ETIAS will offer a streamlined, efficient entry process, making travel to Europe safer and smoother.
Who will need ETIAS?
ETIAS will affect tourists from more than 60 visa-exempt countries, including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Post-Brexit, UK citizens heading to the Schengen Area will now need an ETIAS, signalling a major change for British tourists. Non-EU visitors coming to Europe for tourism, business, or transit must obtain this authorisation, while those with valid Schengen visas are exempt from the requirement.
How do you apply for ETIAS?
Applying for ETIAS is simple and quick, involving an online form that collects personal, passport, and travel details. The system cross-checks this information with security databases like Interpol and Europol, with most approvals coming through in minutes.
ETIAS allows short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period, and the application fee is around €7, with exemptions for tourists under 18 and over 70. While approvals are usually fast, tourists are advised to apply a few days in advance in case of delays.
