Portugal travel news: positive tourism developments this week!

This week, there have been positive developments all around, as it looks as though Portugal is almost ready to reopen its doors! You know what that means...an Algarve villa holiday is within reach!
In an address to the nation on Tuesday evening, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa confirmed that Portugal will be exiting the state of emergency currently in place. This follows the fantastic update from Monday, where no Covid-19 related deaths were reported in Portugal for the first time in nine months. Furthermore, Covid-19 wards have seen remarkable recovery rates and numbers of inpatients are decreasing.
As we've said from the very beginning of all this, we are in awe of the hard work of all people working at the front line of this crisis. After a long, turbulent year it's so good to see the light at the end of the tunnel grow closer.
At this moment, it looks as though the full state of emergency will be lifted from April 30th 2021. There will likely be further easing of restrictions being announced from then.
Tourism from May and beyond
From a tourism perspective, this is obviously welcome news, particularly for Portuguese nationals. Some of you might still be cautious when it comes to travel, but it doesn't mean you can't embrace some form of escape. As we discussed in a recent television report with SIC Notícias, we've seen a 500% increase of Portuguese guest enquiries. This is definitely set to continue with these latest developments.
In UK travel developments, May 17th still seems to be the set date for international leisure travel. With the positive developments from Portugal, all signs are pointing towards the Algarve being one of the top destinations this year. We are expecting to see a further rise in enquiries, not just from UK guests.
