Covid-19: An update from the Algarve
Amidst the Covid-19 crisis, the Algarve’s response has shown an impressive display of solidarity with locals and visitors alike. The SandyBlue team are truly encouraged by the community spirit of the Algarve through these difficult times.
First and foremost, we hope you and your families are keeping well. We also want to say a huge thank you to key workers here, and across the world, who are all making a valiant effort to keep people safe. We know times are uncertain, so this update will cover all of the important facts; Covid-19 response and key statistics in Portugal, the end of lock down measures and our response to keeping guests completely safe.
The Covid-19 response in Portugal
It’s safe to say that the initial response to Covid-19 in Portugal was swift, and it shows. A state of emergency was declared early on in the pandemic timeline, meaning more focus could be put into preparation of hospitals and intensive care units.
Across the Algarve, and indeed the whole country, people united and adhered to the confinement measures put into place. According to Graça Freitas, Portugal's director general for health, 88% of confirmed cases as of mid-April were staying at home and did not require hospital treatment.
Looking specifically at the Algarve, there have been 365 confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic, which reflects the safety of the region and the strict obedience to lock down procedures. Due to this, lock down has been easing out in phases meaning the Algarve is becoming a popular destination post Covid-19.
The end of lock down in the Algarve
The goal of emerging from the Covid-19 lockdown in the Algarve had only the safety and wellbeing of locals and visitors in mind. The lockdown was lifted in phases, which we have outlined below...
- Phase 1 saw the reopening of small trade establishments and individual sports facilities, including golf courses
- Phase 2, which began on May 18th 2020, lifted restrictions on bars and restaurants. Of course, safety measures are in place to allow visitors and staff to keep their distance while still providing the famous Algarve hospitality.
- Phase 3, commencing on June 6th 2020, will see the official start of the beach season! The sandy surroundings, blue waters and stunning views can be enjoyed once more, while establishments with a space of over 400m squared will also reopen.
The resilience of the people in Portugal is the reason this has progressed so positively. With a huge focus on safety, Portugal is able to reopen its doors. With the easing of travel restrictions across Europe, the coming weeks sees flight schedules resume with flights arriving into Faro from UK, Netherlands, Spain, Germany, France, Belgium, Italy, Denmark, Swizterland, Czech Republic and Sweden.
